Allusive means to be indirect
or discreet too. When one is trying to find an allusive tone, one most look for words or phrases that hint an assumption is
being made. The passage might refer to something else but you as the reader you must read the passage twice to find what the
passage assumes the reader to understand.
"It’s okay… We aren’t in the same class. Just don’t
forget that some of us watch the sunset too."
-The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton
In
this passage, an allusive tone is evident by the hidden message “some of us watch the sunset too.” Ponyboy tells
this to Cherry in chapter three after they spend some time together in the drive-in. What is Ponyboy trying to tell Cherry
by saying this? He tries to reassure her that even though they might not be from the same social class they still look at
the same sunset; using it as an example that they both come from and live on the same earth. Although Ponyboy is not frank
with Cherry his tone suggests he wants to be friends with, or in his case, be more than friends with Cherry no matter where
they both come from or live. He acknowledges the fact that “greasers” are sought to be malicious and do not usually
care for anyone or anything but uses the phrase “some of us” indicating he is one of the kind greasers. Remember
that in an allusive tone you have to look for the encoded message.
Assumed, constructive, hidden, indirect, intended, suggested, understand,
and unsaid.
